NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Albertus Magnus College by identical 18-2 finals on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
In the opener, Mitchell starter Bryton Ferris allowed only one run on two hits over 6.0 innings to improve to 4-0 on the season. Brian Ricker took the hill in the nightcap and earned his second win of the spring, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four.
Francis Prettitore paced a Mitchell offense that produced 32 hits on the day. He went 6-for-8 with four doubles, four runs scored and nine RBI. Kyle Hartenstein added five hits and four RBI in the doubleheader while Garet Griffin contributed four hits and three RBI.
Mitchell (11-6 overall) will next host Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday, March 28 at 3:30 p.m. Albertus Magnus (3-10 overall) returns to action at home against Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, March 29 at 3:30 p.m.
Game 1 – Mitchell 18, Albertus Magnus 2
Mitchell scored runs in every inning but the second and finished with 14 hits in the contest. Leading 1-0 in the third, the Mariners padded the margin with four runs that included a two-run double by Prettitore. A two-run double by Griffin in the fourth highlighted another four-run frame, and Mitchell tacked on nine more runs over the final two innings to build an 18-1 advantage.
Albertus Magnus got on the scoreboard behind an RBI single by Justen Rodriguez in the fifth. He also plated the Falcons' second run in the seventh with a ground out to third.
Game 2 – Mitchell 18, Albertus Magnus 2 (6 innings)
Mitchell exploded for seven runs in the third inning and 11 in the fifth to complete the doubleheader sweep. Prettitore had four hits and three doubles in the game, including a pair of two-baggers in the fifth inning alone.
Ricker allowed only one hit over five scoreless innings before the Falcons finally got to him in the sixth. Hunter Dumas doubled to left-center and scored on a single up the middle by Andrew Scully, and Adam Olszyk followed with a double to knock in the second run.
