BOSTON -- The Mitchell College baseball team completed a sweep of Lesley University by winning a pair of games on Sunday afternoon at Bunker Hill Community College.
The two teams began the day by completing the second game of the series, which was halted on Saturday in the first inning due to rain. Mitchell led 2-1 at the time and went on to win 8-4 as Eddie Santiago returned to the mound to pick up the win. The Mariners then posted a 12-8 victory in the nine-inning finale behind starting pitcher Bryton Ferris.
Mitchell (22-10 overall, 10-3 NECC) will make up a doubleheader at Daniel Webster College on Tuesday, April 25 at noon.
Game 2 - Mitchell 8, Lesley 4
Mitchell added to the 2-1 lead with a run in the third courtesy of an RBI single by Jack Finnegan. After Lesley got a run back in the top of the fourth, the Mariners tacked on five runs in the home half to go up 8-2. Tyler Pina plated the first run with a sacrifice fly, and Peter Abate followed with a two-run double while Finnegan capped things off with a two-run single.
The Lynx cut the deficit to 8-4 with a pair of runs in the sixth. Santiago allowed a home run and a double to start the frame before turning the ball over to Bryce Bedard, who retired six of the seven batters he faced while closing out the win.
Santiago allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits over 5.0 innings of work. He struck out six and walked two while improving to 5-1 on the season.
Kyle Hartenstein and Garet Griffin paced the offense with two hits apiece.
Game 3 - Mitchell 12, Lesley 8
Hartenstein and Griffin continued with the hot bats in the finale. The former went 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and two RBI while the latter homered and knocked in three. Steven Gonzalez also got into the mix with three hits and four RBI in the contest.
Griffin's blast, a three-run shot in the top of the fifth, snapped a 3-3 tie and put Mitchell in front for good. The Mariners put up five runs in the seventh, capped by a two-run double by Gonzalez, before handing back five in the bottom of the frame. Gonzalez later tacked on an RBI single in the ninth for insurance purposes.
Ferris made it through 6.0 innings to improve to 5-1 on the season. He yielded three runs on six hits and struck out two before handing the ball over to Brian Stanczuk and Brian Ricker in relief.
