NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team completed a weekend sweep of Lesley University on Sunday, winning by final scores of 37-3 and 9-4 in New England Collegiate Conference action.
The Mariners lit up the scoreboard with 34 hits in the doubleheader, including 26 in the opener. Mitchell swatted six home runs on the day as Dougie DelaCruz and Hunter Yaworski each left the yard twice. The Mariners also recorded school records (DIII) for most runs in a game and largest margin of victory.
Mitchell (12-5 overall, 5-1 NECC), which has won five straight games, will next play at New England College on Wednesday, April 21 at 1 p.m. Lesley (2-10 overall, 2-10 NECC) returns to action at home against NEC on Saturday, April 24 at 2:30 p.m.
Game 1 – Mitchell 37, Lesley 3
After going up 3-0 in the first inning, the Mariners exploded for 12 runs in the second to break the game open. Yaworski hit a grand slam that made it 11-0 and DelaCruz capped the rally with a three-run blast that upped the lead to 15-0.
Mitchell sent 21 batters to the plate in the third inning and pushed across 16 more runs on the strength of 10 hits. Yaworski added his second homer in as many innings, plating three more runs with a shot to right. Later on, Owen Robbins connected for a grand slam, his second of the weekend. By the time Jared Whitby's RBI single plated the final run of the inning, the Mariners held a commanding 31-0 lead.
A total of 12 players knocked in a run in the contest. Yaworski finished with eight RBI – one shy of the school record – while DelaCruz and Robbins each had four.
Game 2 – Mitchell 9, Lesley 4
Mitchell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second thanks to an RBI single by Yaworski and a sacrifice fly by Michael Santiago. The Lynx cut into the margin with a run in the third, but Cochrane responded with a two-run homer off the right-field foul pole to make it 4-1.
DelaCruz led off the fifth inning with a solo shot, his team-leading fifth homer of the season. He later plated another run in the sixth on a ground out, and Cochrane followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 9-1.
Lesley put up three runs in the seventh as Christopher Papallo, Tyler Washington and Giovanni Torres all drove in runs.
Mitchell's Kenny Heon picked up the win in relief, tossing 4.0 hitless innings while striking out five. He improved to 2-1 on the season.
