Baseball Names Team Captains for 2022
NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Mitchell College seniors Dougie DelaCruz, John-John Jose and Hunter Yaworski have been named team captains for the 2022 season, as announced by head baseball coach Travis Beausoleil on Tuesday.
DelaCruz, Jose and Yaworski will serve as captains for the first time in their careers.
"These three guys are obviously very talented and accomplished, but their captainship is based upon their selflessness and their attitudes of always putting the team and their teammates first," said Beausoleil. "In baseball, it is very difficult to be as successful as these guys are, while also maintaining such an unselfish mindset. These three embody the very best qualities we strive for in the Mitchell baseball program."
DelaCruz is coming off an All-America season in which he played in all 35 games and batted a career-high .430 with 13 doubles, eight homers, a school-record 58 RBI and a league-high 39 runs scored. In addition to being named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Year for the second time in his career, he was tabbed MVP of the 2021 NECC Championship after leading Mitchell to the title.
Jose saw action in 21 games last season and logged time at both first base and designated hitter. In 50 at bats he hit .300 with career highs of 14 RBI and 12 runs scored.
Yaworski enjoyed a breakout season in 2021, hitting a team- and career-high .457 while garnering all-conference and all-region first team honors. He finished the year with eight homers and 39 RBI while slugging a league-best .864.
The trio is part of a senior class that has amassed a record of 65-20 over the past three seasons. Last year the Mariners went 26-9 overall and captured their seventh NECC crown.
Beausoleil returns 29 letter winners and adds 17 newcomers to the roster for 2022. Mitchell opens the season with a three-game series at William Peace College on February 19-20.
