Baseball Bounces Back For Split vs. Wesleyan
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team split a doubleheader against Wesleyan University on Sunday afternoon, falling 2-1 in the opener and winning 8-1 in the nightcap.
Both starting pitchers turned in solid efforts in the first game, with Ian Appleby coming out on top thanks to two late runs from his offense. A two-run single by Ryan Molinari in the sixth inning was the difference, ruining a strong outing from Mitchell's Eddie Kaftan.
The Mariners bounced back by scoring the first eight runs of the second game. Mitchell finished with only five hits but benefitted from six walks and four hit batters. Starting pitcher Daniel Driscoll turned in his best effort of the season, tossing 7.0 shutout innings while striking out 10.
Mitchell (14-6 overall) will next host Anna Maria College on Wednesday, March 30 at 3:00 p.m.
Game 1 – Wesleyan 2, Mitchell 1
Mitchell scratched out a run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. A ground-rule double by Hunter Yaworski put runners at second and third with two outs, and Lelo Martinez followed with an infield single to plate the run.
Wesleyan pressured Kaftan in the fourth, putting the tying run on third with only one out. The right-hander protected the lead by striking out the next two batters to escape trouble.
A pair of hits and a Mitchell error helped Wesleyan pull in front in the sixth. The error put two runners in scoring position for Molinari, who hit a chopper up the middle that took an odd bounce and got through. The hit drove in both runners and gave the Cardinals their first lead of the day.
Mitchell put the tying run in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings but couldn't cash in. Appleby went the distance, improving to 3-0 on the season. He allowed one run on six hits and struck out four over 7.0 innings.
Kaftan (2-2 overall) took the loss despite turning in his best outing of the spring. He gave up two runs—both unearned—on five hits while fanning a season-high eight batters.
Game 2 – Mitchell 8, Wesleyan 1
Mitchell jumped on top 1-0 in the first inning after getting four free bases. Two hit batters and a walk loaded the bases for Juan Abreu with two outs, and he drew yet another free pass to force in the game's first run.
The story was similar in the fourth as the Mariners busted the game open with seven runs. An Abreu double and walks to Martinez and John-John Jose loaded the bases, and Matt Falk, Angel Galindez and Bo Yaworski were all hit by pitches to plate runs. Dougie DelaCruz then supplied the big blow with a three-run double to left to make it an 8-0 game.
Driscoll (3-0 overall) allowed only five hits before turning the ball over to Sam Majewski for the final six outs. Wesleyan's lone run came in the ninth inning on an RBI double by Shaun Hillis.
The Cardinals used a total of eight pitchers in the contest. Starter Eddie Zanor took the loss, yielding four runs on two hits over 3.0 innings of work.
