Strong Pitching Leads Baseball Past Anna Maria
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team posted a 4-2 victory over Anna Maria College on Wednesday afternoon in a nine-inning, non-conference clash.
Mitchell starter Tyler Daly allowed one run and struck out a career-high seven batters over 5.0 innings to earn the victory. The Mariners made the most of their three hits but also benefitted from five walks and seven AMC errors.
In the bottom of the second inning, an error and a wild pitch gave Mitchell its first scoring chance of the day. Lelo Martinez cashed in with a single to center field to make it a 1-0 game.
The AMCATS tied the score in the fourth on an RBI single by Nick Genatossio. However, Mitchell responded with three runs in the home half to regain the lead. Anna Maria committed four errors in the frame, with Owen Robbins supplying the lone hit—an RBI single to left—for the Mariners.
Anna Maria added its final run in the fifth on a Mitchell throwing error, and in the seventh the AMCATS brought the tying run to the plate with two outs. The Mariners turned to Kevin Vining out of the bullpen, and the junior left-hander secured the third out to keep the 4-2 lead intact.
Vining went on to close out the game, retiring all seven batters he faced to record his second save of the season. Daly picked up the win and improved to 2-0 on the year. Kenny Heon also tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief and struck out three.
Anna Maria starter Chris Brouwer took the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out two.
Mitchell (15-6 overall) will next host Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday, April 2 at noon.
