Baseball Duo Nabs NECC Weekly Honors
MANSFIELD, Mass. – A pair of Mitchell College baseball players were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday.
Junior Camren Varney was named NECC Pitcher of the Week while freshman Bo Yaworski was tabbed NECC Rookie of the Week. Both earned their respective honors for the second time this season. The duo helped the Mariners to a 4-0 week that included a pair of conference victories.
Varney struck out a career-high 12 batters in a complete game win over Eastern Nazarene College. He took the ball in the first game of the doubleheader and allowed just two runs on four hits over 7.0 innings, improving to 5-1 on the season.
Yaworski, a first baseman, batted .500 with two RBI and six runs scored over four games. He went 3-for-4 with four walks, two RBI and four runs scored in a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Nazarene. He also had a hit and a pair of walks in a non-conference win over WPI, finishing the week with a .765 on-base percentage while batting out of the two-spot.
Varney has made eight appearances and six starts this season and leads the NECC in wins, innings (42.0) and strikeouts (52). Yaworski had played in 24 games and is batting a league-high .484 with 23 RBI and 23 runs scored. He also currently leads all of NCAA Division III in on-base percentage (.656).
Mitchell (18-6 overall, 3-1 NECC) will next play at Fisher College on Wednesday, April 6 at 3 p.m.
