Baseball Grabs 6-2 Win vs. UMass-Dartmouth
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team picked up a 6-2 win over UMass-Dartmouth on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference showdown.
The Mariners put up single runs in six of the first seven innings to seize control, using a combination of nine hits and nine walks to improve to 19-7 on the year. Mitchell left runners on base in every inning—a total of 13 for the game—but didn't need the extra run support thanks to strong outings from Chris Gibbs and Daniel Driscoll.
Devyn Vezina and Andrew Bryant each finished with two hits and a run scored for the Corsairs, who dropped to 10-12 overall.
UMass-Dartmouth came out swinging in the first inning, as Vezina led off with a double to left and Bryant followed with an infield single. DJ Perron plated Vezina with a sacrifice fly to center, but Gibbs did well to limit the damage to a single run.
The Mariners tied the game in the home half of the first on a ground out by Hunter Yaworski that scored Bo Yaworski from third. Mitchell then took the lead in the second inning on an RBI double down the left-field line by Justin Adorno.
With the bases loaded in the third, Steve Cochrane hit a ground ball and beat out a double play to bring in Mitchell's third run. Angel Galindez and B. Yaworski produced a run in the fourth with back-to-back doubles, and Matt Falk scored on a passed ball in the fifth to make it 5-1.
The Corsairs put up a run in the sixth on an RBI double to left by Jared Neikam, but Mitchell matched it in the seventh when Falk advanced to third on an infield single by Galindez and was awarded home on an interference call.
Gibbs and Driscoll didn't need all of the extra runs. Gibbs tossed 6.0 strong innings to nab his fourth win of the season, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six. Driscoll fanned three and gave up just one hit in 3.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first career save.
UMass-Dartmouth used five pitchers in the contest, none longer than 2.2 innings. Starter Andrew Steinhubel took the loss, yielding three runs (one earned) on three hits over 2.0 innings.
Mitchell will next play at New England College on Saturday, April 16 at 1:00 p.m.
