Softball Blasts Lyndon State in Doubleheader Sweep
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team picked up a pair of victories over Lyndon State College on Saturday afternoon, winning by final scores of 25-1 and 10-2 in non-conference action at Alumni Field.
The Mariners pounded out 35 runs on 28 hits in the doubleheader. Taylor Duchesneau went 4-for-6 with six RBI, two homers, a double and five runs scored on the day. She also picked up her first win of the season inside the circle.
Mitchell (2-6 overall) will next host Pine Manor College on Wednesday, March 28 at 2 p.m. Lyndon State (0-2 overall) returns to action at Fisher College on Saturday, March 31 at 10 a.m.
Game 1 – Mitchell 25, Lyndon State 1 (5 innings)
Mitchell scored nine runs in the first inning and never looked back. The Mariners then sent 17 batters to the plate in the second inning and pushed across 14 more runs to go up 23-0.
Duchesneau supplied an RBI double and a two-run homer in the second inning before adding the solo shot in the third. She was equally impressive with the ball in her hand, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out six over 5.0 innings of work.
Samantha DelConte, Stephanie Adams and Danielle Autieri each finished with a pair of doubles for the Mariners. Autieri and Suzanne Vachon also knocked in four runs apiece.
Alexis Britch accounted for the lone Lyndon State run with a solo homer in the fourth inning.
Game 2 – Mitchell 10, Lyndon State 2 (5 innings)
The Mariners jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings in the nightcap. Vachon and Adams provided back-to-back RBI triples in the first inning to put Mitchell on the scoreboard, and Kaitlin Thibodeau-Corey added to the margin with an RBI double. She later scored on wild pitch to make it 5-0.
Megan Elphick capped a three-run second inning with an RBI double of her own. The Hornets got a run back in the third on a two-out RBI single by Hannah Choiniere. After the Mariners scored a pair in the home half on RBI singles by Vachon and Duchesneau, Lyndon State pushed across another run in the fourth on a single to left field by Cassie Black.
Mitchell starter Shyla Phillips-Krick earned her first collegiate victory, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four over 5.0 innings.
