Softball Drops Two in Season Opener
ORLANDO – The Mitchell College softball team opened the 2010
season on Thursday with a pair of losses to Medaille College at the
Walt Disney World Wide World of Sports Complex. The Mavericks
earned an 11-4 victory in the day’s first game before
rallying for a 5-0 win in five innings in the second contest.
Mitchell got off to a good start in the opening game, taking a 1-0
lead in the first inning behind a solo homer from senior Sara
Krolikowski. She deposited the first pitch she saw over the
outfield fence with a line shot for her 17th career round
tripper.
The lead would not last for long, as Medaille answered with a
five-run second inning and added two more in the third for a 7-1
advantage. The Mariners fought back in the bottom of the third, as
freshman Meghan Burke and Krolikowski smashed back-to-back
homers to get three runs back. It was the first career homer for
Burke and the second time in Krolikowski’s career that she
had gone yard twice in a game.
Medaille pitcher Amanda Westling settled down after the third and
allowed only one hit over the final four innings. The Mavericks
continued to pound the ball, finishing with 17 hits on the day.
Sophomore Kristina Torres gave up 11 runs in seven innings
and struck out five while walking one.
In the second game, Medaille scored three times in the first inning
and never looked back. Megan Anderson was virtually unhittable
inside the circle, allowing only one hit—a double by
sophomore Stacey Suplicki—in nearly five innings of
work.
The game was halted in the fifth inning due to a tornado warning.
Sophomore Marissa Thomas got the starting nod for the
Mariners and gave up three earned runs on 10 hits in four innings
of work.
Mitchell will next play a doubleheader against Thomas College on
Friday, March 12 at the Disney World Wide World of Sports Complex.
The first game of the double dip is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
