
Softball Opens Conference Play with Split Against ENC
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team opened up New England Collegiate Conference play by splitting a Sunday doubleheader against Eastern Nazarene College, falling 9-8 in the opener before responding with an 8-1 victory.
The Mariners fell behind early in the first game and were unable to close the gap despite a late rally. Katelyn Lipsky (Plantsville, Conn.) suffered her third loss of the spring, surrendering seven earned runs across seven innings of work.
Mitchell bounced back in a major way in the second of the twin bill, riding the arm of sophomore Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.), who tossed a seven inning complete game, allowing five hits and one run while striking out three.
The Mariners (10-6, 1-1 NECC) will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 4, when they host Wesleyan University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
Game 1, ENC 9, Mitchell 8
The Lions jumped out to an early edge, plating four runs by the end of the second inning. The Mariners cut the deficit in half when Hannah Lemke (East Haddam, Conn.) collected an RBI single in the bottom of the second and Madison Nicynski (Warwick, R.I.) grounded out to score a run in the in the fifth. ENC responded by scoring four runs in the top of the sixth, but the Mariners refused to go quietly.
Mitchell scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh, aided by multiple ENC errors and a steal of home by Jenna Bennett (Shelton, Conn.), however the comeback fell just short as LaBreck lined out to the shortstop to conclude the game.
Gemma Landry (Lewiston, M.E.) and Hannah Lemke led the Mitchell offense with three hits apiece and each drove in three runs in the loss.
Game 2 – Mitchell 8, ENC 1
It was all Mitchell in the second game, as Emily Reynolds kept the Lion bats at bay, allowing just one run on a double by Alexys Giddings in the top of the fifth.
Gemma Landry, Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.), Madison Nicynski, Jenna Bennett, and freshman Lola Worsdale (Stonington, Conn.) each had multiple hits for the Mariners, who pounded out 13 base knocks on the afternoon. Reynolds also helped her own cause at the dish, finishing 1-4 with a pair of RBI in the win.
Alexys Giddings took the loss for the Lions, allowing 12 hits and five earned runs across five innings of work. Caoimhe Wernsing finished with a team high two hits for ENC in the loss.
