Softball Drops Doubleheader to Trinity
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader to Trinity College on Wednesday afternoon at home, falling 11-0 in the opener and 9-1 in the nightcap.
The Bantams (7-7 overall) held the Mariners to just eight hits on the day. Tiffany Stowers and Madeline Recker combined to throw a five inning complete game in the 11-0 victory. Stowers worked the first three innings, surrendering just a pair of hits and one walk while striking out three, before Recker tossed two perfect innings in relief.
Stowers took to the mound once again for Trinity in game two, pitching four shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out one. Kaysen Shikar came out of the bullpen to toss the final inning of the day, allowing the lone Mitchell run on the day.
Gemma Landry (Lewiston, M.E.), Emma LaBreck (Rollinsford, N.H.), and Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) collected two hits apiece for the Mariners on the day.
Mitchell (10-10 overall, 1-1 NECC) will look to rebound when they return to conference play on Saturday, traveling for a doubleheader against Lesley University.
Game 1 – Trinity 11, Mitchell 0
The opening game belonged to the Bantams right out of the gate. Following a leadoff walk, Kennedy Rogers doubled to score the first run of the game for Trinity, which was followed soon after by a bases loaded walk to Lizzie Nelson, which gave the visiting team an early 2-0 edge. The Bantams went on to add another run in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth, and four in the fifth to bring the game to a conclusion after five innings.
Mitchell's Katelyn Lipsky (Plantsville, Conn.) absorbed the loss after giving up nine earned runs in four and two third innings of work. LaBreck and DeCicco were the lone players for the Mariners to record base hits in the game.
Game 2 – Trinity 9, Mitchell 1
Trinity once again jumped out to a fast advantage, using a Mitchell error and an RBI single by Kennedy Rogers to go ahead 2-0 after the first inning. With sophomore Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) in the circle, the Mariners were able to keep it close early and found themselves training just 3-0 with three innings in the books.
A big fourth inning saw Trinity push six runs across the plate, however, highlighted by three consecutive RBI singles from Lizzie Nelson, Abigail Alper, and Alyssa Gazivoda. The Mariners lone run came in the bottom of the fourth when Lipsky singled to score Jenna Bennett (Shelton, Conn.), who had previously reached on a fielder's choice.
Reynolds took the loss for Mitchell, allowing nine runs, eight of them earned, across five innings of work. Gemma Landry paced the Mariners at the plate in the second game, going 2-3.
