CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Mitchell College softball team picked up their first two conference wins of the season on Sunday, routing Elms College 8-0 in the opener, before winning 11-0 in the second game of the twin bill.
The Mariners (7-9, 2-2 GNAC) return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 2, with a pair of games against intrastate foe University of Saint Joseph. The Blazers (2-16, 0-2 GNAC) will look to bounce back with a pair of games against Fisher College on Tuesday, April 1.
Game 1 – Mitchell 8, Elms 0
The Mariners dominated in the opening game of the day, jumping ahead 2-0 in the top of the second on an RBI double by sophomore Madison Cole (Westbrook, ME) and a run scoring single off the bat of freshman Nadya Hudson (Milwaukee, WI). The team pounded out five more runs the next inning, highlighted by RBI doubles from junior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) and Hudson, before capping the scoring in the fifth when a run scored due to an Elms error, as the game was shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Hudson went 2-3 with a double and four RBI, while Madison Cole and sophomore Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) each also had two hits. Senior Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) picked up the win in the circle, tossing five two-hit innings, striking out six.
Reece Hebert took the loss for the Blazers, surrendering eight runs (six earned) in five innings.
Game 2 – Mitchell 11, Elms 0
The Mariners picked up where they left off, scoring three runs in the first, two in the second, and four in third, building a commanding lead over the Blazers. Mitchell plated two more runs in the fifth, leading to the game being called due to the eight-run rule.
Brooke Whitmarsh had a big day at the plate, finishing 4-4 with a double, a triple, five RBI, and two runs scored. Olivia DeCicco picked up the win, tossing five innings of one-hit ball.
