Knisel in the Mix at MASCAC Championship
WEST BOYLESTON, Mass. -- Mitchell College sits in sixth place after the opening round of the 2019 MASCAC Men's Golf Championship on Saturday afternoon at Wachusett Country Club.
The story of the day for the Mariners was Nick Knisel, who shot a two-over par 74 and is two shots off the lead. The round, which featured four birdies, was the lowest of his collegiate career, as well as the lowest ever by a Mitchell golfer in a conference tournament setting.
Springfield College's Mike Strong leads the pack following and even-par round of 72. Teammate Jake Raichle is a shot behind at 73, and Knisel is one of three golfers tied for third at 74.
Springfield leads the field of nine teams with a first-round tally of 300, seven shots clear of Westfield State University. Salem State University is also within striking distance at 309.
Mitchell shot 334 as a team, its lowest round of the season. Michael McCarthy came in at 84 while Michael Izzo and Christopher Ronzello rounded out the scoring at 87 and 89, respectively.
The MASCAC Championship will conclude on Sunday with a final round of 18 holes. Tee times begin at 10:30 a.m.
