BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Mitchell College men's soccer team had its
season come to an end on Wednesday afternoon after a 2-0 loss to
Southern Vermont College in the quarterfinals of the 2009 NECC
Championship.
The Mariners, who beat the Mountaineers over the weekend to secure
a postseason berth, couldn't replicate the feat in the rematch.
Nick Haggerty and Gus Chery each had a goal and an assist on
the day for the Mountaineers, who advanced to the semifinals
and will face top-seeded Daniel Webster College. SVC
improved to 11-7-1 while the Mariners finished the season with an
overall record of 5-12-0.
Haggerty scored in the 27th minute of play off a beautiful pass
from Chery to put the Mountaineers on the board. It was a physical
game from start to finish, as Southern Vermont had 17 fouls
and Mitchell had seven.
With 78:17 on the clock the roles reversed, and Haggerty set up
Chery for a nifty goal inside the 18 to give the Mountaineers a 2-0
lead on the Mariners.
Mitchell may have outshot SVC 19-11, but the Mountaineers
put eight shots on goal to the Mariners' six. Aaron
Eschler had several challenging saves in the game as he got the win
at keeper for Southern Vermont. Mitchell goalie Kevin Woodford
finished with six saves.
