NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team split a pair of games at The Spring Games on Tuesday morning, winning 8-4 over Penn State New Kensington before suffering a 17-1 setback in five innings to Husson University.
The win over PSNK was Mitchell's first of the season, as well as the first for head coach Heather Rush. The Mariners moved to 1-4 overall on the season and have completed their spring trip in Florida.
All nine starters recorded a hit as the Mariners exploded for a season-high 18 hits against PSNK. Suzanne Vachon, Megan Elphick and Danielle Autieri finished with three hits apiece and combined for four RBI and six runs scored. Italia Krick went 2-for-4 and knocked in three runs.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Mitchell tied the game on an RBI double by Autieri and pulled in front courtesy of an RBI single by Krick. The Mariners increased the lead to 4-1 in the third inning on a two-run single by Krick, and in the fourth Vachon plated another run with a double to make it a four-run game.
Penn State answered back with a three-run fifth inning to cut the deficit back to one. After a single by Morgan Williams brought in the first run, Madison Grahm followed with a two-run homer to pull the Nittany Lions to within 5-4.
Autieri scored on a passed ball in the fifth to give the Mariners some breathing room. A ground out by Elphick and an RBI single by Autieri provided Mitchell's final two runs of the contest to make it 8-4 in the sixth.
Taylor Duchesneau scattered seven hits over 7.0 innings of work to earn her first win of the season. She allowed four runs (three earned) and struck out two while walking one.
Against Husson, Mitchell fell behind 3-0 before even stepping to the plate. The Mariners quickly got a run back as Samantha DelConte led off with a single and scored on a double by Vachon. However, those were the only two hits for Mitchell on the day, as Husson pitcher Jen Jones retired the next 15 batters she faced.
Mitchell will next host Johnson State College on Saturday, March 25 at 11 a.m.
