Softball's Zaccaria, Romagnino Earn NECC Honors
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – A pair of Mitchell College softball players were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) on Monday morning.
Senior Brittany Zaccaria was named NECC Player of the Week while freshman Lindsey Romagnino was tabbed NECC Rookie of the Week. The duo helped the Mariners to a 6-0 conference record last week that extended the team's winning streak to 10 games.
Zaccaria batted a team-high .542 last week with six RBI and a team-high 11 runs scored. The senior center fielder hit safely in all six games and led the Mariners with 13 total hits that included three doubles and a triple. She went 5-for-8 with a double, RBI and five runs scored in a doubleheader sweep of Wheelock. She then had four hits and scored three runs against Daniel Webster, and she wrapped up the week by going 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI in the opener against Regis while adding two more hits in the finale. Zaccaria slugged .750 for the week with an on-base percentage of .560 along with three stolen bases and a walk.
Zaccaria earns player of the week status for the first time in her career. She has started and played in 26 games and is batting a career-best .333 with 11 RBI and 26 runs scored. In 16 conference games she's batting .419 with 11 RBI and 22 runs scored.
Romagnino batted .524 with a team-high 11 RBI over six games last week. The freshman left fielder had 11 total hits that included three doubles and three home runs. She hit a walk-off homer in the first game against Daniel Webster and went 3-for-3 with three doubles and three RBI in the finale. She also hit a pair of home runs in the same inning in the opener at Regis and finished with four RBI in the game. Romagnino slugged 1.095 for the week and had an on-base percentage of .545 to go along with 10 runs scored.
Romagnino earns rookie of the week honors for the second time this season (April 9). She has started all 30 games and leads the team with a .370 batting average with 20 RBI and 28 runs scored. In 16 conference games she's batting .500 with four home runs, seven RBI and 22 runs scored.
Mitchell (17-13 overall, 14-2 NECC) owns the longest winning streak in the NECC and has won 14 straight in conference play. The Mariners, who have already secured no worse than the second seed in the upcoming NECC Championship, will close out the regular season at Becker College on Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m.
