Softball Loses to DWC, Will Face Elms
WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Mitchell College softball team suffered an 11-2 loss in five innings to Daniel Webster College at the 2012 NECC Championship on Friday afternoon.
The loss drops the Mariners into the loser's bracket of the double elimination tournament. Mitchell will next take on Elms College at 2 p.m. The winner will advance to play on Saturday while the loser will end its season.
Against Daniel Webster, Mitchell fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first but quickly answered in the home half of the frame. Freshman Lindsey Romagnino doubled with two outs and scored on a triple by senior Stacey Suplicki to tie the game.
The Eagles took control behind a nine-run second inning, knocking Mitchell starter Marissa Thomas from the game in the process. Daniel Webster pounded out eight hits during the rally and benefited from a pair of Mitchell errors.
Mitchell scored its only other run in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by senior Shannen Pelletier. The Mariners finished with only six hits in the contest, including a pair by junior Meghan Burke.
The loss snapped a 13-game winning streak for the Mariners.
In Friday's first game, Elms dropped a 6-1 final to top-seeded Lesley University. Earlier this season, Mitchell swept Elms for the first time in school history.
