Softball Makes It 10 Straight at Daniel Webster
NASHUA, N.H. – The Mitchell College softball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a doubleheader sweep at Daniel Webster College on Wednesday, winning by final scores of 16-1 in five innings and 6-1 in seven.
Mitchell evened its record at 10-10 on the season and remained unbeaten in New England Collegiate Conference play at 10-0. The Mariners were paced by Shannon O'Neil (4-for-5 with three RBI) and Samantha DelConte (5-for-7 with a home run, triple, two doubles and three RBI) while Brittany Fiederlein and Dylan Riccardi also knocked in four runs apiece and each picked up a win inside the circle.
Sarah Durocher combined to go 3-for-5 over the two games to lead the Eagles (4-12 overall, 2-6 NECC). She was also touched for both losses in the pitcher's circle.
Mitchell returns to action at Fitchburg State University on Thursday, April 16 at 3 p.m.
Game 1 - Mitchell 16, Daniel Webster 1
In the opener, Riccardi went 3-for-4 with a triple and knocked in four runs while Fiederlein went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and four RBI.
The teams traded runs in the first, but Mitchell broke it open with a 10-run third in which 14 batters came to the plate. Fiederlein doubled twice in the frame and knocked in three runs while Riccardi singled and tripled and plated two. The Mariners finished with a total of 10 hits in the inning and never looked back.
Mitchell added five more runs in the fourth as Riccardi, O'Neil and Fiederlein all drew walks to force in runs. Danielle Autieri and Jenny Groman also delivered RBI singles in the frame as the lead expanded to 16-1.
Fiederlein (9-5 overall) allowed just three hits and struck out seven in the complete game performance. She has earned a win in her last nine outings and has allowed only seven earned runs in 54.0 innings during the stretch
Durocher's RBI single in the first accounted for the lone Eagle run.
Game 2 - Mitchell 6, Daniel Webster 1
In the nightcap, Autieri notched a three-run homer as part of a four-run third inning that broke the game open for the Mariners. O'Neill and DelConte each finished 3-for-3 at the plate and knocked in a run.
DelConte led off the game with a home run down the right field line to give Mitchell a lead it would never give up. O'Neil tacked on a RBI single in the fourth that was followed by Autieri's bomb over the right field fence to make it 5-0.
Kayla Free's ground-out RBI in the fourth pushed Abigail Goslin across for DWC's lone run. Durocher finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
The story of the game was Riccardi, who made her collegiate pitching debut in her 129th career game. Mitchell's everyday third baseman didn't miss a beat in the circle, allowing just three hits while striking out three and walking one to improve to 1-0 on the season.
