CHICOPEE, Mass. – Mitchell College split a pair of one-run games at Elms College on Sunday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action.
In the opener, the Mariners scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning to tie the game, only to see the Blazers walk off with an 8-7 victory. Mitchell then salvaged a 5-4 win in the nightcap behind another late rally, with Kaitlin Thibodeau-Corey plating the go-ahead run in the seventh.
Mitchell (8-11, 1-6 NECC) will next host Salve Regina University on Tuesday, April 9 at 3 p.m.
Game 1 – Elms 8, Mitchell 7
The Mariners put up five runs in the first inning to take the early lead. Alex Lopez got things going with a two-run single, and Thibodeau-Corey and Nene Capeles each followed with RBI singles of their own. The Blazers got two runs back in the home half of the first before putting up a five-spot in the second to grab the lead.
The score remained 7-5 until the seventh. Laurissa Amaker and Suzanne Vachon each singled to set the table for Sydney Oatway, who came through with a clutch base hit to plate both runners and tie the game.
Elms used four consecutive singles in the bottom of the seventh to produce the winning run. Katelyn Sylvia supplied the winning hit as the Blazers walked off for their third straight league win.
Taylor Duchesneau took the loss for Mitchell, surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on 14 hits over 6.1 innings of work.
Game 2 – Mitchell 5, Elms 4
Mitchell fell behind 4-0 after two innings but fought its way back into the game thanks to a three-run third. Thibodeau-Corey and Lopez each contributed RBI singles in the frame while Capeles chipped in an RBI double.
The Mariners trailed 4-3 heading into the seventh when Amaker drew a lead-off walk to put the tying run on base. Mitchell later had runners at the corners with two outs when Oatway did it again, tying the game with a single that scored Amaker. Thibodeau-Corey then followed with a single of her own to put the Mariners on top for the first time in the game.
Vachon pitched around a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. She gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits and improved to 5-4 on the season.
