Softball Walks Off Against Saints, Split Wednesday Doubleheader
LEESBURG, Fla. - The Mitchell College softball team split their doubleheader in Florida on Wednesday, March 13th, at Sleepy Hollow Park, dropping the opener 4-2 against Trinity College before rebounding with a 4-3 win over the College of St. Scholastica in the afternoon.
The Mariners (2-6, 0-0 GNAC) are set to wrap up their annual spring break trip on Thursday, March 14th, with a doubleheader against Marywood University (11:15 am) and Ohio Northern University (1:30 pm).
Game 1 – Trinity 4, Mitchell 2
The Bantams wasted no time jumping out to a lead against junior starter Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.). After the Mariners stranded runners on second and third in the top of the first, Trinity answered in the bottom half of the inning when Kennedy Rogers ripped an RBI double to left field and Tiffany Stowers followed this up with a two-run triple to center field.
The Mariners got one run back in the top of the third on an RBI single by sophomore Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.), and DeCicco delivered one again in the fifth with a run scoring single to the shortstop to make it a 3-2 ballgame. Trinity plated one more insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when Isabella Calagna scored Gianna Tito on a single to center field, and the pitching combination of Erin Gerard and Stowers was able to silence the Mariner bats the rest of the way.
DeCicco, Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME), and Lola Worsdale (Stonington, Conn.) recorded two hits each for the Mariners, while DeCicco finished with two RBI and Worsdale scored a pair of runs.
Reynolds worked all six innings for Mitchell in the circle, allowing three earned runs as her record dropped to 1-3.
Gerard got the start for the Bantams and surrendered two runs in four innings before being relieved by Stowers. Stowers pitched three scoreless one-hit innings to close things out, earning her first save of the year.
Game 2 – Mitchell 3, St. Scholastica 2
The Saints jumped ahead by two in the bottom of the first when Lauren Laviano hit an RBI single and Grace Hadlich followed with a run scoring triple to right field. Mitchell plated their first run in the bottom half of the inning when Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.) singled home Olivia DeCiccio to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
Laurn Lavino then laced an RBI double in the top of the fifth to increase the Bantams lead to two, but Mitchell's Emma LaBreck (Rollinsford, N.H.) ripped a two-run double in the bottom half of the frame to knot the score at 3-3. The Mariners then took the lead for good when Emily Reynolds scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh, sending Mitchell to their second win of the spring.
