
Bennett Collects 100th Career Hit, as Softball Sweeps Bulldogs
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team improved to 4-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play by sweeping a doubleheader with Dean College on Sunday afternoon. The Mariners took the first game by a 9-3 final, before silencing the Bulldogs 8-0 in the second game, which ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Senior Katelyn Lipsky (Plantsville, Conn.) picked up her second win in as many days in the opener, twirling four inning of shutout ball, allowing just one hit while striking out five. Junior Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) also earned her second victory of the weekend in the circle by tossing a five inning shutout in the second game, surrendering just four hits and retiring one via the strikeout.
The Mariners (7-9, 4-0 GNAC) will look to build on their four game winning streak when they return to action on Wednesday, April 10th, with a non-conference doubleheader at Salve Regina University. Dean (0-14, 0-4 GNAC) return to play on Tuesday, April 9th, with a non-conference doubleheader against Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
Game 1 – Mitchell 9, Dean 3
The Mariners wasted no time in the opening game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI single off the bat of Jenna Bennett (Shelton, Conn.) and a run scoring triple down the right field line by junior Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.). Whitmarsh then singled up the middle to drive in another run in the second, before sophomore Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) drew a walk with the bases loaded to make it 4-0.
The Mariners plated two more runs in both the third and fourth inning, and despite the Bulldogs scoring twice in the top of the fifth, Mitchell hung on for the six-run victory.
Whitmarsh finished the game 3-4 with two triples and three RBI. Junior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) and freshman Madison Cole (Westbrook, ME) also hit triples in the win, while Landry, Jenna Bennett, and senior Hannah Lemke (East Haddam, Conn.) had two hits apiece.
After Lipsky worked four innings of one-hit ball, Hill came on to close the door, allowing three runs across the final three innings of the game.
Jilian Glynn took the loss for Dean after surrendering 14 hits and nine runs in six innings.
Game 2 – Mitchell 8, Dean 0
The Mariners took their first lead in the second game of the day when Madison Cole drove in Olivia DeCicco with an infield single in the bottom of the second inning.
Starting pitcher Emily Reynolds helped her own cause at the plate by ripping a two-run triple in the fourth, and Cole followed that up by scoring Reynolds with an RBI single through the left side. Jenna Bennett doubled in the fifth to drive in Gemma Landry and collect career hit number 100, and the Mariners followed that up with three more runs to end the game early due to the run rule.
Emily Reynolds and Madison Cole each drove in three runs for the Mariners, while Landry, Whitmarsh, DeCicco, and Cole had two hits apiece.
Dean's Jessica Stewart was the losing pitcher after giving up seven runs (six earned) across four innings of work.
