Softball Sweeps Spring Break Doubleheader
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Mitchell College softball team swept a doubleheader at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Thursday, blanking King's College, 1-0, before holding off Gwynedd Mercy by a final of 4-3.
The Mariners (3-1, 0-0 GNAC) will look to stay hot on the final day of their spring break trip when they face Penn State Abington University at 9:00 am and the Coast Guard Academy at 11:00 am at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
Game 1 – Mitchell 1, King's 0
Both starting pitchers turned in dominant performances in the opening game of the day for the Mariners, as senior Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) tossed five shutout innings, scattering four hits and two walks while striking out three. On the other side, Alyssa Fox got the start in the circle for the Monarchs and allowed just one run, the game winner, in seven innings of work.
With the game still scoreless in the top of the seventh, sophomore Madison Cole (Westbrook, ME) lined a one-out single to centerfield. After a single by junior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.), senior Emma LaBreck (Rollinsford, N.H.) plated the go-ahead run with a single to left field, scoring Cole.
Senior Katelynn Goodman (Virginia Beach, VA), who entered the game out of the bullpen to begin the sixth inning, went on to retire the side in the bottom of the seventh to secure her first Mitchell victory. Goodman allowed just one hit and one walk across two scoreless frames. Despite giving up just one run, Fox took the loss and dropped her record to 0-1.
Madison Cole led the Mariners with a 3-4 performance, with one run scored. LeBreck went 2-3 with a walk and an RBI, while DeCicco also had two hits in the win.
Kara Krouse and Megan Matsko had a pair of hits apiece for the Monarchs.
Game 2 – Mitchell 4, Gwynedd Mercy 3
The Mariners pounced on Gwynedd Mercy starter Emily Murphy in the bottom of the first, plating four runs on error by the Griffins, along with RBI singles by Emma LaBreck and sophomore Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.), along with a run-scoring fielder's choice by junior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.).
Following a pair of scoreless innings, the Griffins got three runs back in the top of the fourth off Mitchell's Houstyn McConaghy (Lincoln, R.I.), using a wild pitch, an RBI single, and a bases loaded walk to trim the deficit to one, 4-3. Emily Reynolds then came out of the bullpen in relief of McConaghy with the bases loaded and one away, and the senior escaped the jam, inducing a groundout to get the lead runner at the plate before retiring the final out of the inning on a called third strike.
The Griffins threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Avery Schwartz and Hannah Smith picked up back-to-back singles with two away, setting up a first and third situation trailing by one. Reynolds again worked her way out of trouble, getting Hannah Cohen to fly out to centerfield to secure the second consecutive victory for the Mariners and a sweep of their Wednesday slate.
LaBreck, Clancy, Drago, and senior Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.) each drove in one run for Mitchell. Olivia DeCicco led the Mariners with two hits in four at bats, while also scoring one run.
Emily Reynolds improved to 2-0 after striking out four and allowing three hits over three and two third shutout innings. McConaghy started in the circle for the Mariners and allowed five hits and three runs over three and one third innings.
Emily Murphy took the loss for Gwynedd Mercy after surrendering four runs (three earned) in six innings of work.
