Softball Swept on Final Day of Spring Break
LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Mitchell College softball team wrapped up their spring break trip with a pair of losses on Thursday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, narrowly falling to Penn State Abington, before dropping a 10-2 decision to the Coast Guard Academy at North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
The Mariners (3-3, 0-0 GNAC) will make their way back north and return to the diamond for their home opener on Wednesday, March 19, with a pair of games against Vermont State University Lyndon.
Game 1 – Penn State Abington 4, Mitchell 3
In their opening game of the day, the Mariners drew first blood in the top of the first when senior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) hit a leadoff triple to left-center, and was driven home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Olivia DiCicco (Haverhill, Mass.). The Nittany Lions evened up the score in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Isabella Antosiewicz, yet were unable to put any ore runs on the board after DiCicco induced a ground out to escape a first and third jam.
The Mariners jumped ahead, 3-1, in the fourth after senior Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.) belted her first homer of the spring and fellow senior Christina Housley (Norfolk, VA) laced an RBI double, driving in the first run of her Mitchell career. Once again, the Nittany Lions had an answer, tying the game in the bottom half of the frame on back-to-back run scoring singles by Emily Foxhill and Marlena Hacker.
With the game still knotted up, 3-3, in the bottom of the sixth, the Nittany Lions used a pair of Mitchell errors in the infield to plate the go-ahead run, which proved to be the game winner.
Landry and Housley had two hits apiece for the Mariners, while Whitmarsh went 1-2 with a home run, one RBI, a walk, and one run scored. DeCicco dropped to 0-1 after allowing four runs (three earned) in six innings of work.
Gretchen Yanss tossed a complete game to earn the win, giving up just two earned runs.
Game 2 – Coast Guard 10, Mitchell 2
The Bears got on the board first in the final day of Mitchell's spring break trip, scoring once in the top of the first, before breaking the game open with five more runs in the fourth inning. The Mariners plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI triple by Brooke Whitmarsh and an error on the Coast Guard infield.
That was as close as the Mariners got, as the Bears added three more runs in the seventh inning, taking advantage of multiple Mitchell errors.
Olivia DiCicco had a team-high two hits for the Mariners, going 2-3 with a run scored.
Senior Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) dropped to 2-1 on the spring after surrendering seven runs (three earned) across five innings. Senior Katelynn Goodman (Virginia Beach, VA) came out of the bullpen and work two three-run innings.
Dana Walker threw a complete game for Coast Guard, scattering five hits
