Mitchell Hires Jewett to Lead Mens Lacrosse Program
NEW LONDON, CONN. - Mitchell College has hired Steve Jewett to
lead the men's lacrosse program. Jewett was at the helm
of the Hamden Hall Country Day School boys lacrosse program for the
past 18 years, where he posted over 125 wins and was named the US
Lacrosse Fairchester League Coach of the Year twice.
He has had great success instilling the love of the game in his
players and owes a winning record to his emphasis on team play,
"This is a great game that, with the right combination of players,
connecting as a team, can result in a win on any given day."
Jewett plans to bring the same philosophy to Mitchell
College. His experiences in education and business compliment
his coaching, to present his players with a fair and consistent
style of management. Jewett said about his style and
the upcoming season, "Hard work and determination will be two
critical factors in meeting our goals for 2009 and beyond. Any
players looking to get involved and play a direct role in a fast,
developing program should really consider Mitchell."
A St. Lawrence University graduate, Jewett was a three year starter
for the Saints while earning all league honors at his midfield
position and participating in the NCAA Division III tournament in
1984 and 1987.
The Mariners men's lacrosse program will continue to build a young
but emergent program. After a 2008 season consisting of more losses
than wins, the returning team is hungry for success and looks to
field more complete athletes for 2009. Key returning seniors
include attacker Zach Ledvina (New Bedford,
Mass.), midfielder Ian Gosselin (Uncasville,
Conn.), and midfielder Josh Souza (New Bedford,
Mass.). Other returners include junior midfielder
John (KK) Kearney (Wellesley, Mass.) and
sophomores Joseph Rice (Northbridge, Mass.) and
John Hoffman (Bala Cynwyd, Penn.).
The squad will look to the energy and athleticism of a young but
able freshman and sophomore class, along with the experience and
leadership of upperclassmen to complete the roster. Coach Jewett
and his Mariners will strive to build a team that will persevere
and build for an optimistic future. With hard work and team play,
the Mitchell College men's lacrosse team is poised for a breakout
year.
