WBB Holds Off Becker
LEICESTER, Mass. – Mitchell College came away with a 64-58 road victory over Becker College in New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball action on Thursday night.
Sophomore Savannah Boyle poured in a career-high 21 points to lead three Mitchell players in double figures. Sophomore Toshina Jessamy netted a season-high 19 points and grabbed six rebounds while senior Kate Mulloy added 10 points, six boards and four assists.
The Mariners improved to 4-7 overall and 4-1 in NECC play. Becker, which was led by Haley Ooms' game-high 26 points, dropped to 3-8 overall and 3-2 in the league.
Becker scored the first basket of the game, but after Boyle tied the game on the ensuing possession the Mariners never trailed again. Back-to-back three-pointers from Mulloy and Boyle put the Mariners in front 8-2 in the early going, and Mitchell held the Hawks to just 4-for-28 shooting in the stanza to lead 24-17 at the break.
Becker picked up its play in the second half and cut the deficit to 45-43 following a three-pointer by Ooms with 10:06 to go. Sophomore Amanda Garcia then answered for the Mariners to keep them in front. Five minutes later, another trey from Ooms pulled the Hawks to within two once again at 50-48. The Mariners didn't buckle, as sophomore Diamond Thomas made a lay-up and was fouled for a three-point play.
The Mariners closed out the game by going 8-for-10 from the charity stripe in the final 1:22. Mitchell shot 16-for-20 from the line in the game.
Boyle went 5-for-8 from long range as the Mariners hit eight total treys and shot a season-high 47 percent from three-point land. Ooms also hit five three-pointers in the contest and added 11 rebounds and five assists.
Mitchell will next play at Bay Path College on Saturday, January 11 at 3:00 p.m.
