WBB Picks Up Win at UMass Boston
BOSTON -- The Mitchell College women's basketball team continued its strong start to the season with an 88-74 victory at UMass Boston on Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center.
The Mariners, who improved to 3-0, are off to the best start in their Division III history. Amina Wiley led the Mariners with a double-double of 26 points and 13 rebounds and shot 11-for-15 from the floor. Dede Stevenson added a season-high 23 points while Le'Sandra Turner and Sam McKenna chipped in 15 points apiece.
After falling behind 5-0 to start the game, Mitchell responded with a 10-2 run and didn't trail again in the half. The Mariners led by as many as 10 points and took a 47-39 lead into the locker room at intermission. Wiley paced the visitors with 15 points in the opening stanza.
UMass Boston used a 13-2 run midway through the third quarter to grab a 56-53 lead. The Beacons led by as many as seven before Mitchell responded with six straight points, although a late bucket gave the hosts a 63-60 advantage heading into the final period.
The Mariners stole the lead behind an 8-0 run early in the fourth. McKenna supplied a pair of baskets during the stretch, which yielded a 70-64 advantage for the visitors.
The Beacons pulled to within two with 3:32 left on the clock, but Mitchell closed out the game by making free throws down the stretch. Stevenson did the bulk of the heavy lifting, going 13-for-14 from the charity stripe in the final 3:24.
Mitchell will next play Smith College on Friday, November 19 at 7:30 p.m.
