Albertus Magnus Defeats Women's Soccer 7-0

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's soccer team was
handed a 7-0 defeat by Albertus Magnus College on Monday
afternoon.
Juniors Sam Gigliotti and Ashley Velazquez each finished with two
goals and an assist for the Falcons (5-1 overall). Freshman
Danielle Figueroa also chipped in with a goal and three
assists.
Albertus Magnus scored the only goal it would need in the fifth
minute off the foot of junior Jenna Riccio. Figueroa played a cross
into the box from the right side that Riccio deposited into the
right side of the net.
The Falcons would add goals in the 17th minute by
sophomore Krystal Quinones and in the 19th minute by
Gigliotti. Albertus Magnus finished off the half with another
score-Gigliotti in the 43rd minute off an assist from
Quinones-to take a 4-0 lead into the break.
Mitchell came out in the second stanza and was more assertive in
the midfield. The Mariners fought for possession and kept the
Falcons at bay until the 73rd minute, when Figueroa
broke through the defense for an unassisted goal. Velazquez netted
the final two goals for Albertus Magnus, the first coming in the
77th minute and the second with two seconds remaining in
the contest.
Sophomore Brittany O'Neil made nine saves in goal for Mitchell (0-6
overall) in the first half. Junior Morgan Lindsay played the final
45 minutes and finished with three saves. Freshman Alicia Fernandez
(1 save) and junior Christina Oddo combined for the shutout in goal
for the Falcons.
Mitchell opens conference play at home against Bay Path College on
Saturday, September 26 at 12 p.m.
