NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Mitchell College women's soccer team dropped a 6-0 decision in its season opener at the United States Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday evening.
Goals by Liz Runci, Alyssa Soto, Sarah Hills, Caroline Eastman and Gabrielle Auzenbergs propelled the Bears to victory.
Runci started the scoring in the first half when she took a pass over the top of the defense from Lindsay Duplessis that left her one on one with the goalie. She slipped the ball past Mitchell goalkeeper Shirley Palmer for her first goal of the season.
Coast Guard's offense went quiet for the rest of the first half but picked it up quickly at the start of the second. Sato got the Bears going again in the 55th minute with her first goal of the season off an assist by Runci.
The Bears pressed on as Hills scored on an effort in 56th minute, followed by a pair of scores from Eastman. Auzenbergs finished off the scoring with a tally in the 90th minute assisted by Hills.
Goalie Holly Moore made one save to record her second shutout of the season and the fifth of her career. Sophomore Shirley Palmer made eight stops in goal for the Mariners.
Coast Guard improved to 2-0-0 overall while Mitchell dropped to 0-1-0.
The Mariners will next play at New England College on Wednesday, September 10 at 7 p.m.
