Women's Soccer Shut Out by Coast Guard
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer
team dropped a 3-0 decision to cross-town rival Coast Guard Academy
on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Rachel Deschene led Coast Guard (3-2-0 overall) with a goal and an
assist while Katie Romas and Brittany Fifer also found the back of
the net. Goalkeeper Mary Mills turned away all three shots she
faced to record the clean sheet.
The Bears held a 9-8 margin in overall shots but put seven on goal
compared to just three for the Mariners (2-2-0 overall). Mitchell
enjoyed an 8-1 edge in corner kicks but could not take
advantage.
Coast Guard's lone corner kick came in the 23rd minute and
yielded the game's first goal. Deschene played a ball through
the box that found Romas unmarked at the far post, and she finished
off the pass for her first goal of the season.
Despite trailing, Mitchell played a solid first half and controlled
possession throughout the opening 45 minutes. While the Mariners
controlled the pace, the Bears remained steadfast on defense and
did not allow a quality scoring chance. The score stood at 1-0
heading into the halftime intermission.
Coast Guard seized control in the second half and put Mitchell on
its heels. The Bears wasted little time adding to their lead as
Deschene netted her second goal of the season just 1:02 into the
stanza. She drove a shot into the left side of the goal after
picking up a loose ball inside the box.
The Bears added an insurance goal in the 80th minute to seal the
victory. Shannah Shelton found Fifer with a pass up the middle
of the field that she finished inside the right post for her second
goal of the year.
Freshman Kaylee Woodford made four saves in goal for the Mariners,
who lost at home for the first time this season.
Mitchell will next host Connecticut College on Friday, September 17
at 4:30 p.m.
