OT Goal Lifts Conn College Over Women's Soccer
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team
suffered a 1-0 loss in overtime to Connecticut College on Friday
evening at Alumni Field.
Conn College's Jill Cote netted the game-winning goal in the 95th
minute to snap the scoreless tie. She put a shot on goal from 35
yards out from the right wing that was misjudged by goalkeeper Kaylee
Woodford and skipped past her toward the far post. Woodford
almost erased the mistake by diving for the ball at the goal line,
but it knocked off the post and over the line for the golden
goal.
The win was the first for the Camels (1-2-0 overall) on the season.
It also marked Cote's first goal of the year.
Mitchell (2-3-0 overall) battled hard to send the game to overtime.
Conn College was the aggressor from the start and pinned the
Mariners into their defensive half for much of the game. The Camels
held a 23-2 edge in shots and tested Woodford throughout.
Mitchell's rookie net minder finished with 10 saves in the
loss.
Conn College nearly had a goal in the 52nd minute on a shot by Kate
Wegener that hit off the crossbar. The rebound came out to Tori
Frank, who then blasted a shot right into the hands of
Woodford.
Mitchell's best chance to score came in the final minute of
regulation on its only corner kick of the match. Freshman Caley McClendon
played the ball into the box and the ensuing shot was snapped up by
goalkeeper Lee Tsairis, who was making her collegiate debut.
Mitchell will next play at Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday,
September 21 at 4 p.m.
