Offensive Explosion Propels Women’s Soccer Past Brooklyn

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Six different players scored at least one goal for the Mitchell College women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon, as the Mariners erupted for nine goals during a 9-0 non-conference victory over Brooklyn College.
Freshman Haley Jeske (Maricopa, Ariz.) led the way, finishing with a hat trick in just her second collegiate game. Senior Isabel Foley (Framingham, Mass.) added a pair of goals, her first two of the season, while Morgan Fontaine (Middletown, Conn.), Elon Johnson (Freeport, BHS), Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.), and Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) each also found the back of the net.
It marked the second time in the Division III era of the program in which the team has scored nine goals, having reached the mark previously against Wheelock in October of 2011. Additionally, with the win, the Mariners begin their season 2-0 for the first time since 2010. Mitchell has now outscored their opponents 12-0 across their first two games.
The Mariners came out on fire, scoring first on a Haley Jeske penalty kick less than 10 minutes into the action. Morgan Fontaine netted her third goal of the season just over a minute later, then Cassandra Roman made it 3-0 in favor of the home squad when the sophomore fired one past the opposing keeper with nine minutes and 15 seconds gone by.
By the time the intermission rolled around, Mitchell had added three goals, Elon Johnson and Lauren Cordero, both unassisted, and Jeske for her second of the game, this one coming off a feed from Isabel Foley. Foley then notched her first score of the season on a penalty kick midway through the second half. The senior followed that up shortly after with her second goal of the season, zipping it past the keeper from close range after Rahel Scully (Kingston, N.H.) delivered a perfect corner kick into the box. Jeske closed out the scoring in the 76th minute, collecting the hat trick by beating her defender on the top right side of the box and sending the ball soaring into the left corner of the goal.
Junior goalkeeper Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) continued her hot start to the fall, recording five saves on route to her second shutout in as many games.
The Mariners outshot the Bulldogs 24-8, with Jeske receiving credit for eight of them, four on goal. Foley and Fontaine finished with four shots apiece.
Dionisia Payamps and Flor Ramos led the offensive charge for Brooklyn, each getting off three shots, while keeper Angelina Vasta made nine saves.
The Mariners (2-0-0) will return to the field on Wednesday, September 6, when they open up GNAC play with a home match against Simmons University at 4:00 pm.
