Women’s Soccer Suffers First Loss of Season at Dean
FRANKLIN, Mass. – After opening their season with a pair of wins and a tie, the Mitchell College women's soccer team suffered their first defeat of the fall on Saturday afternoon, falling to Dean College 3-0 in a GNAC showdown at Grant Field. The game was called due to lightening with 5:26 remaining in the second half.
Dean senior Jazzy Sztyler-Magee led the offensive attack, scoring back to back first half goals under a minute apart, while junior Lea Betterncourt found the back of the net in the 55th minute of the match. Sztyler-Magee scored first when she received a pass from her teammate on the right side of the box and fired one over the charging Mitchell keeper, Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME). After the Mariners kicked it off, Sztyler-Magee was able to intercept a pass which gave her a free lane towards Landry, and she finished from the right side into the left corner of the goal. The Bulldogs were able to notch their third goal of the game when they took advantage of a Mitchell yellow card, which set Bettencourt up with a penalty kick she was able to convert.
Both teams finished with 14 shots, yet Dean held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal and an 8-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.
First-year player Morgan Fontaine (Cheshire, Conn.) tallied a game-high six shots, but was unable to put one past Dean keeper Haley Gaunt, who finished the day with five saves. Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.), Haley Jeske (Maricopa, Ariz.), Elon Johnson (Freeport, BHS), and Rahel Scully (Kingston, N.H.) each registered one shot on goal for the Mariners. Gemma Landry finished the day with four saves, suffering her first loss of the season after allowing just one goal in the three previous games.
The Mariners (2-1-1, 0-1-1 GNAC) will return home for a conference showdown against the University of Saint Joseph on Wednesday, September 13th, at 1:00 pm. Dean (3-1-0, 2-0 GNAC) also play next on Wednesday, when they host Elms College.
