Softball Swept at Coast Guard
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College softball team dropped both
ends of a doubleheader at Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday afternoon
by final scores of 10-0 and 19-0.
Coast Guard (23-6 overall), which is ranked fourth in New
England, won both games in five innings and extended its winning
streak to six games. Amanda Frederick was 6-for-7 with a double,
two homers, six runs scored and six RBI while Holli Bastinck was
5-for-7 with two doubles, four runs scored and five RBI for the
Bears.
Mitchell saw its five-game winning streak snapped as the Mariners
dropped to 12-8 on the season.
Game 1 - Coast Guard 10, Mitchell 0
Frederick got the Bears started right away with a three-run
homer in the first inning and was 3-for-3 with a double, a pair of
homers and five RBI. Bastinck was also 3-for-3 with a double
and two RBI in the win. Becky Miller had two hits and scored a pair
of runs.
Hayley Feindel fired a one-hit shutout with one walk and eight
strikeouts in the opener. Senior Kelly
Reynolds had the only hit of the game for Mitchell, a single in
the second inning.
Sophomore Kristina Torres (5-5 overall) took the loss for
the Mariners.
Game 2 - Coast Guard 19, Mitchell 0
In the nightcap, Coast Guard scored six times in the first with
Megan Cook delivering an RBI single before Anna Funk ripped a
two-run double for the 6-0 lead.
Funk was 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBI in the win while
Frederick and Maddie Buchert were each 3-for-4. Courtney Wolf was
2-for-3 with a three-run homer and four RBI. Miller, Caitlin Force
and Jamie Kim each added two hits in the win as Coast Guard had 22
hits in the nightcap.
Feindel (21-6 overall) worked the first three innings and allowed a
pair of hits and struck out four to pick up the win. Catherine
Walker pitched the final two innings and allowed three hits.
Sophomore Marissa Thomas (7-3 overall) went the distance
and took the loss for the Mariners. Freshman Meghan
Burke had two of Mitchell’s five hits.
Mitchell returns to action at home against Albertus Magnus College
on Wednesday, April 14 at 3 p.m.
