
Softball Cruises Past Regis in GNAC Doubleheader
WESTON, Mass. – The Mitchell College softball team ran their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) record to 9-1 on Sunday afternoon, sweeping a road doubleheader against Regis College.
The Mariners rode a complete game by senior Katelyn Lipsky (Plantsville, Conn.) to an 8-0 victory in the opener, before scoring five runs in the first inning en route to a 9-1 win in game two.
The Mariners (13-13, 9-1 GNAC) are scheduled to play Saint Joseph's College (ME) on Tuesday, April, 23rd. The Pride (7-21, 3-11 GNAC) will return to play for a non-conference doubleheader at home on Wednesday, April 24th, against Mass. Maritime.
Game 1 – Mitchell 8, Regis 0
A seven run first inning propelled the Mariners to victory, as Jenna Bennett (Shelton, Conn,) got the scoring started with a sacrifice bunt, which scored Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME). Junior Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.) followed with a three-run home run to push the Mitchell lead to 4-0. Freshman Haley Westfal (La Habra, Cali.) added an RBI single and another run scoring on an error to wrap up the big inning for the Mariners. Bennett added an RBI groundout in the sixth to cap the scoring.
Senior Katelyn Lipsky (Plantsville, Conn.) improved to 7-3 and lowered her ERA to 3.12 after tossing six shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out three.
Chloe Beland went 2-3 for Regis, while Mya Gaspie was tagged with the loss. Gaspie failed to record an out and gave up six runs.
Game 2 – Mitchell 9, Regis 1
Whitmarsh continued her hot day at the plate, ripping an RBI single to left field to begin game two of the twin bill. Sophomore Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) drew a walk with the bases loaded, and junior Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) did the same, before sophomore Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) plated one run on a fielder's choice, before Lola Worsdale singled to score a run.
The Mariners added three more runs in the fourth when Gemma Landry hit an RBI double and DeCicco hit a run scoring single, and one more run in the fifth on a Hanna Lemke sacrifice bunt. Worsdale capped the scoring with a bunt single in the fifth, securing Mitchell's ninth GNAC win of the spring.
Jenna Bennett and Lola Worsdale had two hits apiece, while Olivia DeCicco drove in three runs. Junior Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) improved to 5-8 with five innings one-run ball. Reynolds allowed seven hits, one walk, and struck out three.
Chloe Beland went 3-3 for Regis, while Abby Erickson drove in the Pride's lone run.
