Baseball Blanks Anchormen for First Win
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.) tossed six innings of two-hit ball on Friday afternoon, helping lead the Mitchell College baseball team past Rhode Island College, 3-0, and to their first win of the season in a non-conference showdown at Alumni Field.
Gibbs surrendered five walks and struck out six, working out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn his first win of the spring. Junior Jacobn Quilies (Wallkill, N.Y.) came out of the bullpen and twirled three scoreless innings to earn the save, allowing a pair of hits while striking out five.
After five scoreless frames by both teams, the Mariners got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when junior Nicholas Bracale (East Haven, Conn.) led off with a triple, and was driven home on a sacrifice fly by the next batter, junior Kenneth Miller Jr. (New London, Conn.).
The Anchormen threatened in the top of the eighth, using a walk and a single to put runners on first and third with one away. Quilies then punched out Izaiah Rivera for the second out, and escaped the jam when Parker Camelo was tagged out at the plate on a failed double-steal. The Mariners added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Miller Jr., before on a balk on the RIC pitcher allowed Bracale to cross home plate.
Kenneth Miller Jr. collected a team-high two hits for Mitchell, going 2-3 with a pair of RBI. Bracale finished 1-3 with a triple and two runs scored in the win.
Terry Murray got the start for the Anchormen and turned in four one-hit innings with four strikeouts. Samuel Gray came on to start the fifth inning and was credited with the loss after giving up three runs in three innings. Daniel Trzepacz led the way RIC offense, finishing 2-4 with a double.
The Mariners (1-2, 0-0 GNAC) will return to play on Saturday, March 1, when they host the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at 12:00 pm. The Anchormen (0-1,0-0 LEC) have a week off before they face Stevenson University on their spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
