Baseball Edges Clark in Non-Conference Game
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Mitchell College baseball team edged Clark University 4-3 on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference game at the Granger Athletic Complex.
Camren Varney (Montville, Conn.) picked up his second win of the season, tossing seven innings of four hit ball, striking out eight. Ryan Solimine (Danbury, Conn.) earned his first save of the spring, coming out of the bullpen to close the door.
After four scoreless innings, the Mariners finally broke through, jumping ahead on a two-run single by Dougie DelaCruz (Uncasville, Conn.) in the top of the fifth inning. Owen Robbins (East Lyme, Conn.) laced an RBI single in the top of the seventh to make it 3-0, before a Clark error allowed another Mitchell run to cross home the next inning.
Carter Doran answered with a three run home run in the bottom of the ninth, but Solimine came on for Mitchell to seal the deal.
Owen Robbins led the Mariners at the plate, finishing 3-4 with one RBI. Matt Falk (Enfield, Conn.) had two hits, while DelaCruz went drove in two and collected one hit.
Casey Gorczyca took the loss for the Cougars, surrendering two runs across five innings of work, while Carter Doran went 3-4 with four RBI for Clark.
Mitchell (18-4, 4-0 NECC) will return to conference play on Saturday, April 8, when they host Lesley University in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
