Martinez Drives in Four, Powers Baseball Past Cardinals

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team peeled off their fifth consecutive victory on Tuesday afternoon, cruising past Wesleyan University 13-3 in a non-conference game played at Andrus Field. The Mariners, who have lost just once since March 15th, scored double-digit runs for the 15th time this season and are now averaging just under 11 runs per game.
Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.) and Tyler Daly (Wallingford, Conn.) combined to toss nine innings of three-run ball for the Mariners, with Gibbs earning his fourth win after working five innings of one run ball. Daly, who came out of the bullpen, surrendered just two runs across four innings, walking none and striking out four.
Mitchell jumped out to an early lead, going up 2-0 in the top of the first after Lelo Martinez (New London, Conn.) ripped an RBI single to left field. The Mariners added another run in the second and fourth inning, before a two-run triple off the bat of Justin Adorno (New Britain, Conn.) in the fifth pushed the Mitchell advantage to 6-0.
Christian Boudreau doubled in the bottom half of the inning to drive home the first Cardinal run of the afternoon, but Martinez followed with an RBI double in the top of the sixth for the visiting ball club.
Martinez led the Mariners at the plate, finishing 3-4 with four RBI, two walks, and two runs scored. Adorno, Bo Yaworski (Brooklyn, Conn.), and Angel Galindez (Carolina, PR) collected two hits apiece in the victory, while Adorno drove in three, Yaworski two, and Dougie DelaCruz (Uncasville, Conn.) also had two RBI.
James Marsden tossed only a single inning for Wesleyan but absorbed the loss by allowing a pair of early runs which the Cardinals never rebounded from. Marsden also led the home team with three hits, while Ernie Little and Evan Diaz each had two hits.
The Mariners (21-4 overall, 6-0 NECC) will return home for a non-conference game on Wednesday, April 12, against Mass. Maritime at 4:00 pm.
