Baseball Sweeps ENC to Stay Unbeaten in Conference Play
WEYMOUTH, Mass. – The Mitchell College baseball team ran their winning streak to 10 games on Saturday, sweeping a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Eastern Nazarene College, 12-1 early and 12-1 in the nightcap.
The Mariners dominated the opening game of the twin bill, riding the arm of right handed pitcher Ryan Solimine (Danbury, Conn.) to victory. The senior improved his record to 3-1 by tossing a seven inning complete game, surrendering just six hits and one run while striking out six.
It was all Mariners in the second game as well, as senior Eddie Kaftan (Old Lyme, Conn.) picked up the win, tossing six innings of one run ball, collecting nine strikeouts along the way.
The Mariners will jump right back into action on Sunday, April 2, when they visit Western New England University for a non-conference game at 1:00 pm.
Game 1 – Mitchell 12, ENC 1
With Solimine in control on the mound, Mitchell wasted no time at the plate. The Mariners scored their first run of the game in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Dougie DelaCruz (Uncasville, Conn.), then Lelo Martinez (New London, Conn.) plated the next run on an RBI groundout the following inning. A four run fourth inning and a five run fifth inning broke the game wide open, as the Mariners snapped the Lion's 14 game winning streak.
DelaCruz, Bo Yaworski (Brooklyn, Conn.), and Matt Falk (Enfield, Conn.) all had multiple hits for the Mariners, while Falk drove in three runs and DelaCruz and Martinez had four RBI each.
Elvis Rojas and Brandon Guerrero had two hits apiece for the Lions in support of Spencer Boynton, who took his first loss of the season after giving up nine run across four innings of work.
Game 2 – Mitchell 12, ENC 1
The Mariners continued their hot play, jumping out to an early one run lead on a Lelo Martinez RBI single in the top of the first. Mitchell came back with four runs in the second, highlighted by a three run home run by senior Matt Falk.
The Lions answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning when Anderson Jimenez doubled to right center, but seven runs in the top of the sixth inning pushed the Mariners comfortably ahead. Martinez belted an inside the park grand slam during that game breaking sixth inning, while Justin Adorono (New Britain, Conn.) added an RBI single.
Lelo Martinez capped his day by going 2-4 with five RBI and a run scored, while Falk drove in three, and Adorno collected a team-best three hits in the win.
Kenny Heon (Uncasville, Conn.) pitched one scoreless inning out of the bullpen for Mitchell, striking out two.
