Baseball Battles Back Against Coe to Collect Fourth Straight Win

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team overcame an early three-run deficit to defeat Coe College 6-5 on Saturday afternoon in a Russmatt Baseball Invitational game held at at Northeast Regional Park. The Mariners have now won four consecutive games after falling to William Peace University on February 18th, and are 2-0 on their annual spring break trip thus far.
Facing Mitchell junior Jadon Canelli (Northford, Conn.), the Kohawks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on an RBI single by Kevin Lamb in the second inning and a two-run home run off the bat of Jake Brosius in the third. A two-run homer off the bat of Angel Galindez (Carolina, PR) put the Mariners on the board in the top of the sixth, while an RBI single from Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.) in the seventh knotted the score up at 3-3, before Galindez drew a bases loaded walk two batters later to push Mitchell ahead by one.
The lead was short lived, as James VanHooser drove home Reid Rausch in the bottom half of the inning, but Mitchell senior Michael Gajda came through with an RBI double in the top of the eighth to score Cole Lalli (Coventry, Conn.) and Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.), giving the Mariners the lead for good.
Jadon Canelli improved his record to 2-0 on the season, tossing seven inning of four-run ball, striking out six. Junior Nicholas Strojny (Woonsocket, R.I.) came out of the bullpen and earned his first save of the spring, surrendering just one run and two hits across two innings of work.
Ethan O'Donnell got the start for the Kohawks and turned in seven quality innings, allowing just four earned runs. Jack Walsh relieved O'Donnell in the eight and was tagged for two runs in two thirds of an inning, picking up the loss.
Galindez finished the day 1-3 with thee RBI, two walks, and one run scored. Sophomore Adam Vartanian (Cumberland, R.I.) and freshman Chas Terni Jr. led the way with two hits apiece. Terni Jr. has now also hit safely in all six of the Mitchell's games to begin the season.
The Mariners (5-1, 0-0 GNAC) will jump right back into action on Sunday, March 10th, facing the University of Southern Maine at Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, Florida.
