Salisbury Rolls Over Baseball to Force a Seventh Game in Babson Park Regional
BABSON PARK, Mass. – One day after being held to just one hit, the Salisbury University baseball team saw their bats came alive in a big way, as the Sea Gulls routed Mitchell College 15-0 to force a decisive seventh game in the Babson Park Regional of the NCAA Tournament at Govoni Field.
The Sea Gulls pounded out 19 hits, including three home runs, with seven players registering at least one hit. Freshman Aidan Brinsfield tossed seven innings of three-hit ball to pick up his fifth win of the spring, walking one and striking out a season-high 11 batters. Danny Sheeler finished 3-5 with a double and four RBI, while Max Ehrhardt also had three hits, including a double and a home run, to go along with three RBI and three runs scored. Kyle Brex added three hits, and Tim Pertucelli and Zach Geesaman both also went deep in the win.
Sophomore Jacob Quiles (Wallkill, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss after surrendering 10 hits and eight runs in three innings. Freshman Jacob Ditscher (Danbury, Conn.) came out of the bullpen in relief and was effective, posting three consecutive scoreless frames before Salisbury plated six runs off of him in the seventh and eighth inning.
The Sea Gulls opened the scoring in the top of the first after a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded resulted in an RBI for Danny Sheeler. Zach Geesaman followed with a run scoring bunt single to make it 2-0, and after a fielder's choice, Jacob Quilies induced a fly out to left field, stranding runners on the corners. The Salisbury bats added three more runs in second on RBI singles by Kyle Brex and Tim Petrucelli and a run scoring double off the bat of Sheeler. The Sea Gulls then plated three more in the third on a Brex base hit and a two-run single by Sheeler, growing their lead to eight runs.
Salisbury added one run in the seventh, five in the eighth, and one more in the ninth to cap the scoring, while holding the Mariners to just four hits, their second lowest output of the season.
Angel Galindez (Carolina, PR), Cole Lalli (Coventry, Conn.), Jack Hayes (New Milford, Conn.), and Michael Gajda (New Britain, Conn.) were responsible for the four Mitchell hits.
The Mariners (34-12) will jump right back into action, facing the Sea Gulls (31-10) in a winner take all seventh game of the Babson Park Regional on Sunday afternoon at 2:20 pm. The winner will advance to the Super Regional Round of the NCAA Tournament.
