Baseball Rallies, Pulls Away from Keene State
Keene, N.H. – The Mitchell College baseball team rallied from a two-run fourth inning deficit to push past Keene State College 11-7 on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at the Owl Athletic Complex.
Freshman Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.) powered the offense for the Mariners, finishing 3-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore Bo Yaworski (Brooklyn, Conn.) collected two hits and drove in two runs, while Angel Galindez (Carolina, PR) also had two hits for the Mariners, who snapped a two game losing streak.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Mitchell jumped ahead in the third when senior Dougie DelaCruz (Uncasville, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly and an error by the Owls gave the visitors a 2-0 edge. Keene freshman Hamilton Barnes ripped a two-run double in the top of the third to knot the score, before the Mariners plated three runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a Sestokes RBI double and a Yaworski RBI single.
Keene responded in a big way, pushing five runs across in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 7-5. Mitchell senior Ryan Solimine (Danbury, Conn.) came out the bullpen to quiet the rally, working his way out of the inning before going on toss three and one third innings of no hit ball.
The Mariners tied the game in the top of the fifth, before taking the lead for good in the eighth inning on an RBI triple to right-center off the bat of Dougie DelaCruz. Owen Robbins (East Lyme, Conn.) followed with an RBI double to push the lead to two runs, leading to a sacrifice fly by Justin Adorno (New Britain, Conn.), and Robbins then scored on a wild pitch.
The Owls managed to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning, however Camren Varney (Manchester, N.H.) came on in relief and recorded the final out.
Hamilton Barnes led Keene with a 3-5 day at the plate, finishing with four RBI and a run scored. Troy Brennan took the loss for the Owls, surrendering three critical runs in one inning of work.
The Mariners (25-6 overall, 8-0 NECC) will return to action on Saturday, April 22, when they travel for a conference doubleheader against Lesley University.
