Softball Splits Sunday Twin Bill with Lasers
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team returned to the diamond on Sunday afternoon, splitting a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with Lasell University at Alumni Field.
The Mitchell bats were held in check during the opening game, as the Mariners were shutout 10-0, but the team rebounded with an 8-3 victory in the second game to earn the split against their GNAC South Division foe.
The Mariners (10-12, 5-5 GNAC) return to action on Wednesday, April 9, with a non-league doubleheader at crosstown rival Coast Guard Academy. The Lasers (6-14, 5-3 GNAC) will play next on Tuesday, April 8, with a pair of non-conference games at home against Keene State College.
Game 1 – Lasell 10, Mitchell 0 (5 Innings)
The Lasers jumped out to an early lead in the opening game of the twin bill, plating five runs in the top of the first, aided by a pair of Mitchell fielding errors. Lasell then added three more runs in the top of the second and two more in the third to extend their lead to 10-0.
That proved more than enough for the Lasers, as the Mariners were held to just three hits against Abigail Fortin. Fortin, who improved to 4-4 on the year, pitched a five inning complete game, walking four and striking out three.
Junior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) had two of the three Mitchell hits, while senior Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.) had the other. Senior Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) was the losing pitcher, surrendering 11 hits and 10 runs (four innings) in five innings.
Emily Rondeau finished 2-4 with a double, four RBI, and two runs scored.
Game 2 – Mitchell 8, Lasell 3
After the Lasers opened the game with three runs in the top of the first, the Mariners answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly to centerfield off the bat of Brooke Whitmarsh. Mitchell then pushed three runs across to take a 4-3 lead in the third, as Madison Cole laced a two-run double and Whitmarsh drove in one on an error by the Lasell shortstop.
The Mariners then erupted for four runs in the bottom of the sixth, as Madison Cole and Olivia DeCicco ripped back to back RBI doubles to center, and senior Christina Housley (Norfolk, VA) hit a run scoring single up the middle.
Cole had two hits in four at bats, both doubles, driving in three and scoring twice. DeCicco also had two hits, two RBI, and a run scored, while Housley was 2-4 and drove in one run.
Senior Katelynn Goodman (Virginia Beach, VA) improved to 3-1 on the season after tossing a complete game, surrendering hit hits and three runs (two earned), walking three and striking out two.
Katie Hopkins had a team-high two hits for Lasell, going 2-3 with a two-run double. Meghan Theall was charged with the loss after allowing four runs in three and
