Explosive Seventh Inning Powers Baseball Past Wooster
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team used an 11-run seventh inning to rally from a four run deficit and power past The College of Wooster 19-7 on Sunday afternoon in the Snowbird Baseball Classic at Centennial Park.
The Mariners pounded out 16 hits and received a solid start from sophomore Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.), who earned his first win of the season after tossing six innings of five run ball, striking out five. Six different Mitchell players drove in at least two runs, as Matt Falk (Enfield, Conn.), Lelo Martinez (New London, Conn.), and Owen Robbins (East Lyme, Conn.) tallied three RBI each. Angel Galindez (Carolina, PR), Bo Yaworski (Brooklyn, Conn.), and Adam Vartanian (Cumberland, R.I.) each drove in a pair.
The Mariners got on the board early with an RBI single off the bat of Falk in the top of the first inning. The Fighting Scots answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the third to build a 5-1 advantage. Owen Robbins belted his first home run of the season in top of the fourth to make it a 5-3 ballgame, and Dougie DelaCruz (Uncasville, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly the next inning to trim the deficit to one run.
Mitchell broke the game wide open in a massive 11 run seventh inning which featured RBI singles from Vartanian, Justin Adorno (New Britain, Conn.), Galindez, and Yaworski, as well as a three-run double by Martinez. Galindez finished the game 4-7 and Adorno 3-5, as the duo led the Mariners in hits on the afternoon.
Alex Gerdenich absorbed the loss for Wooster, managing just one out while allowing three earned runs during the game changing seventh inning. Dane Camphausen and Eli Westrick each tallied three hits for the Scots.
Alex Sheehan (Wallingford, Conn.) and Ryan Camp (Cheshire, Conn.) combined for three innings of one run ball out of the bullpen for Mitchell in the win.
The Mariners (5-1 overall) will enjoy an off day before traveling to Auburndale, Florida, for a double header on Tuesday, March 14, against Coe College in the RussMatt Invitational.
