Baseball Falls in Non-Conference Tilt at Western New England
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Mitchell College baseball team saw their 10 game winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon, falling to Western New England University 6-4 in a non-conference game at Trelease Park.
The Mariners fell behind in the bottom of the third when the home squad scored four runs off Mitchell starter Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.). The Mariners scored their first run of the game when Bo Yaworski (Brooklyn, Conn.) belted his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot, in the top of the sixth inning.
The Golden Bears pushed another run across sixth and seventh inning, running the lead to 6-1 as the game entered the final frame.
The Mariner bats then finally broke out, as Matt Falk (Enfield, Conn.) trimmed the deficict to three with a two-run single. Lelo Martinez (New London, Conn.) followed with an RBI single to right-center, however the Mitchell rally fell short as Jared Kuryan punched out Justin Chiulli (Southington, Conn.) swinging with the bases loaded to end the late surge.
Chris Gibbs took the loss for Mitchell, tossing five innings of four run ball. Kevin Hummer was the winning pitcher, working six innings of one run ball, striking out seven.
Matt Falk led the Mariners at the plate, finishing 3-5 with a pair of RBI. Yaworski, Martinez, and Dougie DelaCruz (Uncasville, Conn.) also had multi-hit games in the loss.
The Mariners (16-4, 2-0 NECC) will return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 5, when they host Anna Maria College at 3:00 pm.
