
Women’s Basketball Can’t Slow down Raiders
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team dropped their final home game of the regular season on Tuesday evening, falling 87-57 to Rivier University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Senior Kyrsten Lucas (Manchester, MD) led the Mariners with 15 points, including three made baskets from beyond the arc. Sophomore Inonda Peterson (Houston, TX) chipped in 10 points and four assists off the bench, while freshman Jade Hypolite (Houston, TX) filled the stat sheet to the tune of four points, 10 boards, and seven assists.
The two teams traded punches early, as the Raiders held a 20-15 lead after the first quarter. A 10-4 run by Mitchell to open the second stanza gave the Mariners a 25-24 edge with 5:19 on the clock, but Rivier then put their foot on the gas and outscored the Mariners 15-2 over the remainder of the quarter to build a 12-point advantage at halftime, 39-27.
Rivier then outscored the Mariners 29-16 in the third quarter and 19-14 in the fourth, notching their fifth straight win. Alexa Dufries netted a game-high 21 points off the bench for the Raiders, while Lyric Grumblatt notched a double-double, finishing with 18 points and 17 rebounds.
Despite matching their season-high in shooting percentage (37.3%), the Mariners were outrebounded, 46-29 and committed 18 turnovers. The Rivier bench also held a sizable advantage over Mitchell in the scoring department by a 42-22 margin.
The Mariners (2-17, 0-13 GNAC) will close out their season on Saturday, February 22, when they play on the road at Norwich University. The Raiders wrap up their regular season with a 15-10 overall record (11-3 GNAC) and will await their seeding in the upcoming GNAC Women's Basketball Tournament.
