WBB Tops Becker For 10th Straight Win
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to 10 games on Saturday afternoon with a 59-46 victory over Becker College in New England Collegiate Conference action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Sophomore Diamond Thomas netted a season-high 13 points to pace the Mariners, who improved to 12-7 overall and 12-1 in league play. Senior Kate Mulloy and freshman Caycee Williams each recorded double-doubles while sophomore Savannah Boyle chipped in with 12 points.
Haley Ooms led all scorers with 22 points to pace Becker (6-13 overall, 6-7 NECC). She also notched a double-double with 10 rebounds and added four assists and a pair of blocks. Tatiana Mojica contributed eight points and a team-high 12 rebounds while Brooke Martel grabbed nine rebounds to go with six points.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, combining to shoot 2-for-33 over the first 10 minutes of the contest. Mulloy kept the Mariners in the game with eight points in the first stanza while Ooms recorded six points and seven boards for the Hawks. The end result was an 18-18 tie at the break.
The scoring picked up in the second half, though neither side held a lead of more than three over the first seven minutes. After a lay-up by Mojica tied the score at 27-27 with 13:11 to play, Mitchell went on an 11-1 run to break the game open. Thomas scored four points during the stretch, and a corner jumper by Mulloy capped the run with the Mariners on top 38-28 with 8:02 remaining.
Ooms scored Becker's next six points to help trim the deficit to seven, but it would be as close as the Hawks would get. The Mariners bumped the margin back to double digits on a three by Boyle and never looked back, extending the lead to as many as 14 in the final minute.
Mitchell shot 38 percent in the second half to finish at 26 percent for the game. Williams finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Mulloy grabbed 12 rebounds to go with 12 points. Sophomore Toshina Jessamy also pulled down a season-high 12 rebounds as the Mariners finished with a 56-46 advantage in the category.
Mitchell will next host Regis College on Thursday, February 6 at 6 p.m. Becker returns to action at home against Southern Vermont College on Tuesday, February 4 at 6 p.m.
