WBB Cruises to Sweep of Newbury
BROOKLINE, Mass. -- Four players scored in double figures for Mitchell College in an 81-44 victory over Newbury College on Tuesday night in a New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball clash at Pappas Gymnasium.
Amina Wiley shot 7-for-14 from the floor and finished with game highs of 18 points and 12 rebounds for her 11th double-double this season. Le'Sandra Turner filled up the stat sheet with 16 points on 8-for-11 shooting and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Ramzie Jones provided a boost off the bench with a season-high 15 points while Francesca Pinard chipped in 11 points.
Taylor Kelley led the Nighthawks with 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting, including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Tatianna Occena finished with nine points and three steals.
Mitchell came out of the gates strong, scoring six straight points and forcing a Newbury timeout less than two minutes into the game. The Nighthawks later closed to within three with with 4:13 remaining in the period, though Mitchell ended the quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 22-11 after one.
Mitchell's lead grew in the second with the help of an 11-2 run over a span of 3:19. Mitchell led by as many as 23 points but took a 45-26 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Turner and Jones both had 10 points at the break, and the Mariners shot 51 percent from the field as a team.
The lead continued to grow in the third as the Mariners had the Nighthawks down by 29 late in the third. The margin eventually swelled to a 37-point differential by the final buzzer.
In total, the Mariners scored 40 points in the paint, 37 points off turnovers, 20 fast break points and 15 second-chance points. Mitchell also held Newbury to less than 15 points in ever quarter, including just five points in the final stanza.
Mitchell (11-8 overall, 10-2 NECC) will next host Bay Path University on Saturday, February 2 at noon.
