AMCATS Pull Away from Women’s Basketball
PAXTON, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team came up short in a road contest against Anna Maria College on Tuesday night, falling to the AMCATS, 75-54, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Fuller Activities Center.
Freshman guard Jordyn Streitmatter (Brewster, Mass.) paced the Mariners with a team-high 12 points, while senior Kyrsten Lucas (Manchester, MD) and freshman Shaelene Berrio (Hamiton, Ont.) chipped in 11 points apiece. Lucas, who shot 3-6 from beyond the arc, added six rebounds and a pair of steals, and Berrio pulled down five boards for Mitchell.
A slow start to the game found the score tied 2-2 until Marinique Reddin of the AMCATS put the home squad on top with a pair of free throws with 7:01 remaining in the opening quarter. The Mariners answered two minutes later on a three-pointer from Kyrsten Lucas, but once again, a pair of free throws pushed Anna Maria back on top 6-5 with 4:46 on the clock.
Lucas knocked down two free throws 30 seconds later, giving the visitors a 7-6 edge, but Arianna Gonzalez converted a layup with 3:58 remaining in the frame, which led to a 14-5 run for Anna Maria, and they would carry lead the rest of the way, building a 36-22 edge by halftime.
Marinique Reddin led all scorers, finishing with 19 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Sharayah Scott-Cummings added 17 points off the bench in the win.
The two teams shot similarly, as Mitchell shot 30.5% from the floor, as compared to 36.6% for the AMCATS, however Anna Maria won the rebounding battle, 53-42, and the Mariners committed 22 turnovers.
The Mariners (2-13, 0-8 GNAC) will attempt to snap their losing skid when they return home and face New England College in a conference game on Saturday, February 8, at 3:00 pm. The AMCATS (11-10, 6-4 GNAC) host Colby-Sawyer College in their next game on Saturday, February 8, at 12:00 pm.
