Pride Upend Women’s Basketball
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team was defeated 90-58 against Regis College on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Junior Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) paced the Mariners with 21 points, marking the third time this season she has scored 20 or more, while the freshman guard duo of Jade Hypolite (Houston, TX) and Jordyn Streitmatter (Brewster, Mass.) chipped in nine points apiece. Streitmatter added five rebounds, four steals, and a pair of assists for Mitchell, who dropped to 0-4 in conference play.
A competitive start to the game had Regis ahead by just one point, 21-20, after the first quarter. The wheels came off for the Mariners in the second stanza, however, as the Pride won the frame 20-6 and carried a 41-26 lead into halftime. The Mariners were unable to make up the needed ground, shooting just 32.5% from the floor, 25% from downtown, and 55% from the charity stripe.
Madi Zancan posted a double-double for Regis, finishing with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Jordyn Striggles netted 20 points in the win, while Courtney Doherty tacked on 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. The Pride shot 43% from the floor, won the rebounding battle 51-31, and forced 21 Mitchell turnovers.
The Mariners (2-8, 0-4 GNAC) will look to stop their losing skid when they return to the court on Tuesday, January 21, with a conference matchup at Elms College. The Pride (3-11, 2-2 GNAC) will look for the fourth consecutive victory when they play at Norwich University on Tuesday, January 21.
